VLOM Mod without a plug?

Just got finished tearing down and replacing collapsed DoD lifter on my 4th gen 5.3L (2008 Silverado). I’ve now got my computer tuned to shut off AFM/DoD and am wondering…. Would just cutting the oil tower gaskets inside the VLOM and the tune be enough to prevent the issue in the future, without a plug? Or is the plug absolutely necessary? Thanks

With the VLOM off you pressurize it from the block oil ports side with shop air. Don't use full pressure of course but you are checking for leaks. At rest there should be very little to no air going past solenoids. If it sprays like crazy somewhere you will want a VLOM plug in it.

Cyl 6 intake operates fine on initial crank

Hello. I have a 2012 Tahoe with 150k miles. I had a collapsed lifter once where it was making the knocking sound. It took a few minutes and it released on it's own and ran fine again. I purchased the oil blocker plug and lifter release tool. I installed the plug and clipped all the vlom gaskets per the instructions. I sent off the PCM and had the AFM turned off. The vehicle ran great for a good while until last weekend. Now I have a misfire on cyl 6. I have done all the normal troubleshooting steps with everything working fine. The last part was to check valve train operation. Pull valve cover, use test relay and crank. Every time I crank the engine, the number 6 intake rocker works normally for 3-6 cycles, then stops moving completely, almost as if it is building oil pressure enough to activate…

BTR has good stuff. You should be in good hands. Hopefully they also inspect, mention and take care of any leaking cooler lines, ball joints, etc you agree to like I would. Glad I could help.
