VLOM Mod without a plug?

Just got finished tearing down and replacing collapsed DoD lifter on my 4th gen 5.3L (2008 Silverado). I’ve now got my computer tuned to shut off AFM/DoD and am wondering…. Would just cutting the oil tower gaskets inside the VLOM and the tune be enough to prevent the issue in the future, without a plug? Or is the plug absolutely necessary? Thanks

With the VLOM off you pressurize it from the block oil ports side with shop air. Don't use full pressure of course but you are checking for leaks. At rest there should be very little to no air going past solenoids. If it sprays like crazy somewhere you will want a VLOM plug in it.

Gen 4 is less needed than gen 5 but still recommended. But if you do run without plug I suggest testing VLOM for leaking solenoids first. If it doesn't leak feel free to run without plug but leave VLOM unplugged and it does require the tuning. Something like a range disabler device will NOT suffice.

If later on you find yourself needing or wanting a full mechanical delete, keep in mind I do offer them.

If/probably when I do the mechanical delete, you’d be the one I’d order it from. Not kissing ass here, but this Silverado is the first experience I’ve had with displacement on demand and had no clue what I was getting into when I bought the truck from a guy and all it read on my scanner was P0304. I thought, “hell that’s more than likely an easy fix”. Here we are two months later after a full tear-down. I’ve gotten a ton of valuable information from your channel and would definitely lend my support if/when I buy. I appreciate ya.

So anyway, while running on a consistent dead misfire on cylinder 4, and all the problems that come with it, I was still maintaining 35-40 psi oil pressure at Idle and close to 60 at 2000+ rpm… would i see that with leaking solenoids? The inside of my VLOM actually looked better than the inside of my valve covers. I just finished putting it back together, and am actually changing the oil now. I’m about to crank it up for the first time since repair. What should I look for as far as solenoid leaking? Oil pressure alone?
