Oil pressure discrepancy (40psi vs. 5psi)

After hard acceleration vehicle was hesistant and oil pressure on the factory dash slowly dropped to almost nothing. Check engine light with misfire code was observed. I eventually received the low oil pressure warning. I immediately stopped popped the hood to verify pressure on my mechanical gauge connected in the front engine port and it was reading 40psi steady.
After about 30 min I drove the truck for several miles without issue. I did not attempt to hard accelerate.
I plan to do some research on the oil relief systems. Any ideas?

I did an oil change and replaced oil filter and the two gauge readings are now consistent with each other. I haven't had a lot of time to monitor it but there does seem to be improvement. Oil psi hasn't dropped to dangerious levels again. Will continue to monitor. Truck is officially on the road again.
